A constrained position
Aouda’s marriage to the old rajah is imposed upon her, and after his death his relatives seek to make her part of a suttee. Her apparent consent is shaped by drugs and coercion.
Little protection nearby
The ceremony takes place in a territory beyond effective authority. Aouda’s survival depends on intervention from travelers who happen upon the procession.
The Rescue

The Rescue
A plan nearly fails
Fogg and his companions cannot enter the guarded temple during the night. As the ceremony begins, Passepartout’s disguise creates an unexpected opening.
Escape from the pyre
Aouda is carried away while the crowd believes the dead rajah has risen. She survives, but remains unconscious and physically vulnerable during the first part of the escape.
Safety Beyond India

Safety Beyond India
A protective offer
Fogg explains that Aouda would remain in danger if she stayed in India. He offers to escort her to Hong Kong and help her reach a relative.
Her choice to travel
Aouda accepts the offer, joining the journey as a person with a destination of her own. Her passage is no longer simply an extension of the rescue.
A New Companion

A New Companion
Gratitude becomes attachment
Aouda observes Fogg’s courage, generosity, and restraint during the journey. She becomes emotionally attached, while he appears not to notice the change.
An active concern
She follows the timetable closely and worries about obstacles to his success. Her interest is no longer limited to her own safety.
A Chosen Partnership

A Chosen Partnership
Mutual uncertainty
When Fogg believes himself ruined, he still tries to secure Aouda’s future. She refuses to treat his generosity as a debt that must end with the journey.
Marriage by choice
Aouda asks Fogg to marry her, and he recognizes and returns her love. Their marriage gives both a future beyond the wager’s result.
